Broughton Castle, probably photographed by Mark FienneIntroduction

Broughton Castle is a beautiful place to visit if you enjoy visiting stately homes, and seeing how rich English people lived in the past. It is also a focal point in English history, especially during the 17th century.

Visit Broughton Castle

  • to enjoy the architecure of a lived-in castle, with a functioning moat (still full of water)
  • learn about the people who live/lived in the castle, and their family history
  • to learn about English history, in particular the history of the English Civil War (1642-53), or as some call it, the English Revolution, and about key historical figures, including King Charles I, King Charles II, and Oliver Cromwell

Quote

"the most beautiful castle in all England for sheer loveliness of the combination of water, woods, and picturesque buildings of the later and more decorative age of military architecture"
