To give learners the experience of publishing a newspaper under the pressure of time, editing and laying out texts and illustrations provided by the program
- Newspaper Editor is suitable for collaborative project work at Upper Intermediate level and above. The program puts learners in the position of the editing team of a newspaper, and, as in real life, they have to complete the day's paper within a time limit.
- There is a library of eighty newspaper articles, which students must read, select, edit and fit to the page to create the newspaper. Students also have to cope with news flashes as they come in. Each passage has to be discussed with the team, providing practice in negotiating and persuading.
- A teacher can set the simulation up as a three-hour, one-hour or thirty-minute task and can decide whether to work with the stories within the program or to create a newspaper unique to the school with stories created by the students. This flexibility means that a single simulation could be spread over several lessons and could include writing as well as editing. The clock that ticks down to the deadline can be stopped at the end of the lesson and restarted at the beginning of the next lesson.
To give practice reading newspaper texts (provided)
- The reading passages also have reading comprehension questions, vocabulary exercises and grammar exercises which are useful for classwork and homework.
